Buckle up, we’re about to tell you a little story about mushrooms that’s going to be hard to believe.

But rest assured, we’ve used reputable sources and had it fact checked by some very clever – and excited – nutritional-style-experts.

Are you ready?

You can charge your mushrooms in the sun

Yes, you read that right! Mushrooms + sun = vitamin D overflow.

Mushrooms are one of the few non-animal food sources that contain vitamin D. It’s important we get enough Vitamin D, but we’ll go into more detail about that soon.

Now, here’s the interesting part. If you put your mushrooms in the sun for 15 minutes, you can supercharge their  vitamin D levels by almost ten times. And they will stay that way for almost ten days, even in the fridge. So, when you eat them, your body absorbs that vitamin D. That’s some very good news indeed.

We understand this may seem like the type of health advice thrown around on social media by people who have the word ‘earth’ in their names. But the science is in!

Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is one of those extremely important vitamins because of its own health benefits and it helps you absorb calcium. It also may play an integral role in your immune system.

Vitamin D deficiencies may lead to things like weakened bones. And it also plays a role in reducing inflammation, so it’s pretty important stuff.

Yes, you can get vitamin D from the sun as your skin makes it when exposed to UV rays. You may also get it from supplements, which is lucky as 1 in 4 Aussies are reported to have a vitamin D deficiency. And now you can add this easy – and most novel – way to increase your intake by popping your mushrooms out for a quick sunbake.

Is this a joke?

Nope, not a joke at all. Vitamin D enhanced mushrooms are the new thing. We hope you’re as tickled as we are about this recent development.

With sun safety in so many people’s minds coming into summer, you can go ahead and slip, slop, slap while letting your mushrooms take one for the team.

Pizza covered with mushrooms never looked so good.
